About
What's at the Detroit Eastern Market In Season?
Eastern Market is a concrete forest of Christmas Trees.
Inspecting a Christmas tree for freshness is important to ensure that it remains vibrant and safe throughout the holiday season. Here are some tips to help you determine the freshness of a Christmas tree:
Needle Flexibility:
Gently grasp a branch and run your hand along it. Fresh needles should be pliable and resilient, not brittle or breaking easily. If the needles fall off in your hand or are brittle, the tree may be too dry.
Needle Color:
Look for vibrant green needles. A healthy tree should have its needles attached firmly and should exhibit a rich green color. Avoid trees with a dull or faded appearance.
Needle Retention:
Shake the tree gently or tap it on the ground. A fresh tree should retain most of its needles, with only a few dropping. If a significant number of needles fall off, it may be a sign of a dry or aging tree.
Fragrance:
Fresh Christmas trees usually have a distinctive, pleasant fragrance. If the tree doesn't have a noticeable scent, it may be a sign that it's not as fresh.
Trunk Moisture
Check the cut end of the trunk. It should be sticky with sap, indicating that the tree is still actively drawing up water. A dry cut end suggests that the tree has been out of water for too long.
Bend a Needle:
Bend and crush a needle between your fingers. A fresh needle should release a strong, resinous scent. If it doesn't, the tree may not be as fresh.
Branch Strength:
Make sure the branches are strong and can support the weight of your ornaments. Weak or sagging branches may be a sign of a tree that's not as fresh.
Pest Check:
Inspect the tree for any signs of pests like insects or spiders. Shake the tree outdoors to dislodge any unwanted visitors before bringing it inside.
Moisture Content:
Run your fingers along the needles; they should feel moist and supple. Dry and brittle needles indicate a lack of moisture
Stump Size:
If you are cutting the tree yourself or buying one with a stump, ensure it's freshly cut. The stump should look moist and not have a lot of dry wood at the base.
Remember to make a fresh cut on the trunk just before placing the tree in water at home. This helps the tree absorb water more effectively. Once you've chosen a fresh tree, provide it with ample water throughout the holiday season to maintain its freshness and minimize needle drop.
